Mark Thomas is a Director of Nathan Associates London and leads the firm’s Agriculture and Rural Development practice. Having worked as a development economist in Africa and the Caribbean for 30 years, Mr. Thomas has an advanced understanding of the process of agricultural and rural development and transformation, and its role in delivering economic growth. His expertise covers value chain analysis, market development (factor and product), agriculture policy, sector strategy formulation, agricultural research, extension, information systems, commercialization, and monitoring and evaluation. He has a wealth of experience working with smallholder farming systems and their markets, and is very familiar with the Making Markets Work for the Poor (M4P) approach and the use of challenge funds to align business and development objectives. Mr. Thomas is currently leading the management of DFID’s successful Food Retail Industry Challenge Fund (FRICH), which supports innovation and new business models to bring African food products to the UK.
