Tessie San Martin, a board member since 2011, has worked for more than 25 years in bilateral and multilateral development agencies, academia, and private business.
Dr. San Martin is president and chief executive officer of Plan International USA, part of Plan International, a global organization working in more than 50 countries to lift children out of poverty. Earlier, she was vice president for international development at Abt Associates, a research and international development firm. She helped Abt’s international development portfolio nearly triple—to almost $200 million annually—in less than three years.
As the Director for the Operations Group of the World Bank’s Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), she managed 45 professionals involved in political risk insurance and technical assistance programs. She facilitated the integration of the agency’s $1.2 billion underwriting operations with other risk-mitigation products in the World Bank, oversaw development of the agency’s strategic framework, and increased MIGA’s trust funds to support a bigger technical assistance portfolio.
Before joining MIGA, Dr. San Martin was a partner in IBM Consulting Services (formerly PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting), where she was responsible for building a $100 million international development portfolio of 40 countries. The portfolio included privatization projects in Egypt, Bosnia, and Indonesia; capital markets- and corporate governance-strengthening projects in the former Soviet Union and India; pension reform programs in Mexico and Poland; and competitiveness and workforce development projects in Egypt
